Taxonomy
Ammonites plicomphalus was named by Sowerby (1823). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Subcraspedites, Subcraspedites (Subcraspedites).

It was recombined as Subcraspedites (Subcraspedites) plicomphalus by Spath (1947).
