Mortoniceras woodsi was named by Spath (1921). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Submortoniceras.

It was recombined as Submortoniceras woodsi by Spath (1926), Kennedy et al. (1973), Kennedy et al. (1981), Kennedy and Cobban (1993).
