Taxonomy
Protacanthoceras jukesbrownei was named by Spath (1926) [DISTRIBUTION: Cenomanian; Europe, central Asia.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Acanthoceras (Alternacanthoceras).

It was recombined as Acanthoceras (Alternacanthoceras) jukesbrownei by Marcinowski (1979); it was recombined as Acanthoceras jukesbrownei by Kennedy (1994), Kennedy et al. (1996), Kennedy and Jolkicev (2004) and Gale et al. (2018).
