Oonoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l S Prid Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is not extant.

It was corrected as Ooceras by Foord (1888), Ruedemann (1906).

It was assigned to Cephalopoda by Foord (1888), Ruedemann (1906); to Oncoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981); to Oonoceratidae by Dzik and Kiselev (1995); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
