Pectinoceras was named by Teichert and Glenister (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi Sepkoski's reference number: 299]. Its type is Phragmoceras subtrigonum.

It was assigned to Cyrtogomphoceratidae by Teichert and Glenister (1952); to Polyelasmoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
