Aipoceras was named by Hyatt (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Tour-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is the type genus of Aipoceratidae.
It was assigned to Aipoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Shimanskiy (1967); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
