Tretosternon was named by Owen (1842). Its type is Tretosternon punctatum.
It was assigned to Emydidae by Owen (1842); to Tretosterninae by Lydekker (1889); to Pleurosternidae by Delair (1958); to Helochelydrinae by Kuhn (1966); and to Dermatemydidae by Borsuk-Bialynicka and Mlynarski (1968), Mlynarski (1984) and Carroll (1988).
