Perunautilus was named by Crick and Sobolev (1994) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 1120]. Its type is Perunautilus quadratus.

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Liroceratidae by Crick and Sobolev (1994), Korn (2025).
