Phacoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u P Wc Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus oxystomus. It is the type genus of Phacoceratidae.
It was assigned to Centroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phacoceratidae by Korn (2025).
