Phloioceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 524,995].

It was assigned to Tainoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
