Procymatoceras was named by Spath (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Cymatoceratidae by Kobayashi (1954), Teichert et al. (1964); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
