Ammonites leopoldinus was named by d'Orbigny (1840). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Leopoldia.
It was recombined as Leopoldia leopoldina by Reboulet (1996); it was recombined as Leopoldia leopoldinus by Klein (2005).
