Taxonomy
Trigonoceras was named by M'Coy (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is the type genus of Trigonocerataceae, Trigonoceratidae, Trigonoceratinae.

It was assigned to Trigonoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trigonoceratinae by Korn (2025).
