Aphetoceras was named by Hyatt (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524]. Its type is Aphetoceras americanum.
It was assigned to Deltoceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1942); and to Estonioceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981), Kröger and Landing (2008) and Evans (2011).
