Palaeololiginidae was named by Naef (1922). Its type is Palaeololigo.

It was corrected as Paleololiginidae by Green (1977).

It was assigned to Mesoteuthoidea by Naef (1921), Green (1977); to Mesoteuthina by Jeletzky (1966), Košťák (2002); to Teudopsidina by Doyle et al. (1994), Fuchs (2006); and to Teudopseina by Fuchs and Larson (2011), Jattiot et al. (2015), Fuchs et al. (2017).
