Atlantoceras was named by Bensaid (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-l D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 457]. It is not extant. Its type is Atlantoceras tataense. It is the type genus of Atlantoceratidae.
It was assigned to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Atlantoceratidae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006).
