Hoeninghausia was named by Gurich (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457]. Its type is Hoeninghausia archiaci.

It was assigned to Gephuroceratidae by Yatskov (1990); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Koenenitidae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006).
