Taxonomy
Koenenites was named by Wedekind (1913) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457]. It is not extant. Its type is Goniatites lamellosus. It is the type genus of Koenenitidae.

It was reranked as Hoeninghausia (Koenenites) by Bensaid (1974).

It was assigned to Hoeninghausia by Bensaid (1974); to Gephuroceratidae by Yatskov (1990); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Koenenitidae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006).
