Maternoceras was named by Clausen (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Maternoceratinae.

It was assigned to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Maternoceratinae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006).
