Spirifer rostalinus was named by Hosking (1931). Its type specimen is GSWA1/4949X and is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Crassispirifer.
It was recombined as Crassispirifer rostalinus by Archbold and Thomas (1985), Waterhouse (2004).
