Paraphyllites was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 457]. It is not extant. Its type is Goniatites tabuloides.

It was reranked as Agoniatites (Paraphyllites) by Chlupac and Turek (1983).

It was assigned to Agoniatites by Chlupac and Turek (1983); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); to Agoniatitinae by Korn and Klug (2002); and to Agoniatitidae by Arkell et al. (1957), Korn (2006).
