It was recombined as Coluber atavus by Meyer (1860) and Rage (1984); it was recombined as Elaphis atavus by Lydekker (1888); it was recombined as Rottophis atavus by Szyndlar and Böhme (1996), Szyndlar (1997) and Szyndlar et al. (2008).

Synonyms
  • Coluber papyraceus was named by Fischer (1857). It is not extant. Its type specimen is GPIBO Ro 4023, a skeleton (without tail).

It was considered a nomen nudum by Rage (1984) and Rage (1988); it was synonymized objectively with Rottophis atavus by Szyndlar and Böhme (1996).
  • Morelia papyracea was named by Troschel (1858). Its type specimen is a specimen in the geological and paleontological collections of the University Bonn, presumably GPIBO Ro 4024, a skeleton (almost complete), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Rott, which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - small shale in Germany.
