Taxonomy
Pinacites was named by Mojsisovics (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 457]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Pinacitidae, Pinacitinae.

It was assigned to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pinacitinae by Arkell et al. (1957), Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006).
