Probeloceras was named by Clarke (1898) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1042]. It is not extant. Its type is Goniatites lutheri.

It was reranked as Gephyroceras (Probeloceras) by Clarke (1898).

It was assigned to Gephyroceras by Clarke (1898); to Gephuroceratidae by Yatskov (1990); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); to Acanthoclymeniidae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006); and to Acanthoclymeniinae by Bockwinkel et al. (2013).
