Prolobites was named by Karpinsky (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-l D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Prolobitidae by Arkell et al. (1957); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prolobitinae by Korn (2006).
