Hyla europaea was named by Noble (1928). Its type specimen is Brit. Mus. No. 30267, a skeleton (impression of a skeleton with some bone fragments adhering), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott, which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - small shale in Germany.
