Gonioclymenia was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m]. It is the type genus of Gonioclymeniaceae, Gonioclymeniidae.
It was assigned to Clymeniida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gonioclymeniidae by Bogoslovsky (1981), Korn (2006).
