Taxonomy
Lanthanotus was named by Steindachner (1877). It is extant. It is the type genus of Lanthanotidae.

It was assigned to Lanthanotidae by McDowell and Bogert (1954); and to Varanidae by Estes et al. (1988), Clos (1995), Frank and Ramus (1996), Lee and Caldwell (2000).
