Taxonomy
Phyrtosaster casteri was named by Blake (2007). Its type specimen is CMC TT5305 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is near Eastfork Lake, Clermont County, which is in a Cincinnatian marine mixed carbonate-siliciclastic in the Fairview Formation of Ohio. It is the type species of Phyrtosaster.

D. B. Blake 2007Proximal adambulacrals closely aligned across interbrachium, forming narrowed bar or ridge extended toward mouth. MAO pair prominent, broad, with ventral-proximal surface of MAO pair depressed, spoon-shaped. Actinals few in number; robust, angular, arrangement appearing to differ from arm to arm.
Non-diagnostic characters useful for identification include presence of marginals in single series; marginals robust, rectangular; ventral surfaces flattened, abradial margin angular, fascioles lacking. Axillary little enlarged, cuneate, barely reaching arm margin, adradial edge rounded.
