Diaboloceras was named by Miller and Furnish (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash-u C Mosc-l Sepkoski's reference number: 304].

It was reranked as Paralegoceras (Diaboloceras) by Gordon (1964).

It was assigned to Paralegoceras by Gordon (1964); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Schistoceratidae by Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009).
