Dunbarites was named by Miller and Furnish (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u C Step-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Dunbaritidae.
It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Dunbaritidae by Korn (2006); and to Dunbaritinae by Furnish et al. (2009).
