Exotornoceras was named by Becker (1993) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-l D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1042]. It is not extant. Its type is Gephyroceras superstes.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Posttornoceratinae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006).
