Guizhouichthyosaurus was named by Cao and Luo (2000).
It was synonymized subjectively with Shastasaurus by Shang and Li (2009).
It was assigned to Merriamosauria by Maisch et al. (2006); to Ichthyosauria by Wang et al. (2008); to Shonisauridae by Maisch (2010); and to Shastasauridae by Druckenmiller et al. (2014), Ji et al. (2016).
