Taxonomy
Hammatocyclus was named by Schindewolf (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 954,1042]. It is not extant. Its type is Pericyclus (Hammatocyclus) homoceratoides.

It was reranked as Pericyclus (Hammatocyclus) by Schindewolf (1951); it was reranked as Rotopericyclus (Hammatocyclus) by Gordon (1986).

It was assigned to Pericyclus by Schindewolf (1951); to Rotopericyclus by Gordon (1986); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Pericyclinae by Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009); and to Hammatocyclinae by Ebbighausen et al. (2010).
