Lyrogoniatites was named by Miller and Furnish (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,304,1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Lyrogoniatites georgiensis. It is the type genus of Lyrogoniatitinae.
It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lyrogoniatitinae by Kuzina and Yatskov (1990), Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009), Korn and Sudar (2016).
