Mexicoceras was named by Ruzhencev (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Waagenoceras guadalupense.
It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Prolecanitida by Tazawa et al. (2005); to Kufengoceratinae by Zhao (1980), Furnish et al. (2009); and to Cyclolobidae by Bogoslovskaya (1990), Leonova (2002), Korn (2006), Leonova (2010).
