Taxonomy
Sinophoneus was named by Cheng and Ji (1996). It is not extant. Its type is Sinophoneus yumenensis.
It was assigned to Anteosaurinae by Kammerer (2011); and to Anteosauridae by Cheng and Ji (1996), Li (2001), Li and Sun (2008), Liu (2013).

| Z. Cheng and S. Ji 1996 | Skull large. approximately 35 cm in total length, parietal-temporal region relatively wide. Nostril small, terminal in position. Orbits medium in size, oval in shape, facing anterolaterally, dorsal borders of orbits slightly thickened. Prefrontal positions of skull roof pachyostosed, with paired ridges that delimitate the dorsal surfaces from the lateral surfaces of the regions. Median portion of prefrontal-parietal region of skull roof concave, and bearing an obvious median ridge. Parietal foramen relatively small, and situated within median bulge formed probably only by parietals. Zygomatic arch dorsoventrally broad posteriorly. Choanae elongate and deep, their anterior margins reaching the level of canines., Ventral palatine-pterygoid keel prominent. Pterygoid very large, its transverse flange fairly massive, and lateral end of flange much wider than medial end; quadrate ramus of pterygoid elongate and narrow. Upper dental formula probably I5(?) C1 Pc8-9(?). The last incisor relatively small, canines very large. Postcanine teeth uniform, forming a single row, and slightly smaller than the anterior incisors. | |
