Paraschartymites was named by Ruzhentsev and Bogoslovskaya (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash-l Sepkoski's reference number: 304]. Its type is Paraschartymites repens.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Stenolaphyritidae by Korn (2006); and to Stenoglaphyritinae by Furnish et al. (2009).
