Taxonomy
Posttornoceras was named by Wedekind (1910) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1042]. It is not extant. Its type is Posttornoceras balvei. It is the type genus of Posttornoceratidae, Posttornoceratinae.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Posttornoceratinae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006) and Korn et al. (2016).
