Pseudoschistoceras was named by Teichert (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon]. Its type is Pseudoschistoceras simile.

It was assigned to Schistoceratidae by Teichert (1944); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Metalegoceratidae by Korn (2006); and to Metalegoceratinae by Leonova (2002), Furnish et al. (2009), Zhou (2017).
