Pareiasuchus was named by Broom and Haughton (1913). It is not extant. Its type is Pareiasuchus peringueyi.
It was assigned to Pareiasauria by Broom and Haughton (1913); to Pareiasauridae by Hartmann-Weinberg (1937); and to Pareiasauria by Lee (1997), Lee et al. (1997).
