Tomiopsis balgoensis was named by Archbold and Thomas (1986). Its type specimen is CPC 24270 and is a cast. Its type locality is BMR S9, Stansmore Run 7/5093, which is in a Roadian coastal siliciclastic in the Lightjack Formation of Australia.
