Taxonomy
Merocanites was named by Schindewolf (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 304]. It is not extant. Its type is Ellipsolithes compressus.

It was reranked as Prolecanites (Merocanites) by Librovitch (1927).

It was assigned to Prolecanites by Librovitch (1927); to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protocanitinae by Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009), Ebbighausen et al. (2010).
