Protocanites was named by Schmidt (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Tour-u]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Protocanitinae.
It was assigned to Prolecanitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protocanitinae by Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009).
