Eosagenites was named by Tozer (1971) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Sagenites gethingi. It is the type genus of Eosagenitidae.
It was assigned to Eosagenitidae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
