Lanceolites was named by Hyatt and Smith (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-l Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1066]. Its type is Lanceolites compactus. It is the type genus of Lanceolitidae.
It was assigned to Lanceolitinae by Spath (1934); to Hedenstroemiidae by Ganev (1966) and Kummel (1969); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lanceolitidae by Tozer (1981) and Brayard et al. (2013).
