Metadagnoceras was named by Tozer (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302].

It was assigned to Meekoceratidae by Kummel (1969); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Khvalynitidae by Tozer (1994), Ehiro et al. (2016).
