Taxonomy
Procarnites was named by Arthaber (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Parapopanoceras kokeni. It is the type genus of Procarnitidae.

It was assigned to Proptychitinae by Nakazawa and Bando (1968); to Proptychitidae by Spath (1934), Kummel (1969); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Procarnitidae by Tozer (1981), Tozer (1994), Shigeta and Nguyen (2014), Ehiro et al. (2016), Ehiro (2022).
