Prosphingites was named by Mojsisovics (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Prosphingites czekanowskii.
It was assigned to Arcestidae by Diener (1897); to Owenitidae by Bychkov et al. (1976); to Paranannitidae by Spath (1934), Kummel (1969), Tozer (1981); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prosphingitidae by Tozer (1994), Brayard et al. (2009).
