Taxonomy
Proteusites was named by Hauer (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Proteusites kellneri. It is the type genus of Proteusitidae.
It was assigned to Proteusitidae by Spath (1951), Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
